Friday, June 18th, 2004 Breezes Beach Club

Today I spent the whole day at the Breezes. I had to check out of my room before noon but could leave my luggage at the reception. I was more than willing to extend my stay but unfortunately, they were fully booked the following night, so it wasn’t possible. After a long sleep-in and a fantastic breakfast (which included pancakes and fresh fruit salad), I went for a Thai massage at the spa. I’ve never had that kind of massage before and I really liked it. For those who don’t know: a Thai massage is like a regular massage but it’s administered with the hands and feet of the masseuse, plus quite a bit of bending and stretching of your arms and legs. At times, she twisted my limbs into positions that I didn’t know were anatomically possible but I felt quite energised after the massage and could feel the effect throughout the following days, so I guess she did a good job.

Afterwards, I took off to the beach where it was low tides and I went for a walk in the shallow water that spread quite far between the beach and the outer reef. The water was crystal clear and comfortably warm. Just above the white sand on the ground were lots of small fishes that would swim around my legs and some spots were populated by small crabs. The only thing to watch out for were some black sea urchin (Seeigel) with quite long spikes. Thanks to their colour, they were very well visible, though, so it wasn’t a problem. Back on the beach, I spent some time reading and sunbathing. It was warm but not hot because of a cool breeze coming across the water, so the felt temperature was absolutely comfortable. Add the blue sky, the empty white beach (it seemed like most other hotel guests preferred to stay at the pool, which is completely inexplicable to me), the palm trees and a gorgeous view over the Indian Ocean and you get a pretty good picture of what paradise on earth looks like!

Later in the afternoon, the breeze got stronger and it got a little too cold on the beach, so I continued my recreational break in a wind-protected niche near the pool. I went swimming, kept reading my Lonely Planet on Southern Africa and had some sweets at the hotel’s coffee buffet. Again, I admired their tasteful interior and beautiful design, you just have to feel good being treated like a goddess in this stunning place! God, I felt so relaxed, it was wonderful and I didn’t want the day to end... At 7:30 pm, however, my driver came to pick me up and it was time to say good-bye to the Breezes. It took an hour to drive back to Mwanakwerekwe and I wasn’t even hungry for dinner. Instead, in order to get over the painful loss of paradise, I went straight to bed at only 9:15 pm.

P.S.: For future honeymooners, people in love or anyone who wants to offer himself a unique treat: the Breezes offers special rates during low season (April – June); e.g. a double room deluxe, including breakfast and 3-course dinner for two people, for only 75,- USD per night.
