Saturday, May 15th, 2004 - Back to Cairo

We were scheduled to leave Alexandria around 11 am. Originally, I had planned to go back to the internet place because my father was supposed to get a first version of my website online last night. But when I woke up today, I felt so bad that I didn’t even go for breakfast. I actually took some medication from my travel pharmacy which - to those who know me well - shows how bad I felt!

The bus ride to Cairo didn’t take more than three hours but all I remember of it is me trying to sleep and ignore my stomach. I felt so sick, when we stopped for a toilet break, I thought I would hardly make it to the bathroom! Upon arrival in Cairo around 3 pm, I went straight to bed and slept until the evening. I felt a little better, so I joined the others for our last dinner together. Unfortunately, the place we went to, called “Steak Corner”, was one of the worst but definitely the most expensive dinner we ever had. The food wasn’t half as good as the price would make it look like and also the personnel wase arrogant and disappointing. Too bad.

At least, we had some fun on the way to the restaurant because we took two taxis and the first driver confirmed to Vincent that he knew the place where we wanted to go. So we agreed on a price for a short distance ride, since the restaurant was supposed to be close by, and asked the second taxi to follow the first. After 15 minutes, we had the impression the guy was driving in circles. After 30 minutes, we were sure he was definitely lost. Our suspicion was fed by the second driver, who actually got more and more on his nerves, trying to point the other taxi into a certain direction. He started to shout in Arabic and it didn’t sound like he made any compliments but the other driver didn’t hear him. Finally, after 45 minutes we arrived at the restaurant. The second taxi driver was very mad that we refused to pay more than we had agreed and spit at us when we left. On the ride home I understood why: this time it took us barely 10 minutes by taxi…
